THE BRIDEGROOM'S RING
TWO TALES FROM GARHWAL
When Bhola rescues a mouse from his cat his fortunes change dramatically. The mouse is an expert treasure hunter and fills Bhola's house with gold coins. Now comfortably off, Bhola's mother decides that her son should get married. Everything goes well, until someone steals the wedding ring a day before the wedding. Now Bhola's animal friends - the cat, the mouse, a dog and a crow - must find the ring.
When a man-eating demon catches a kayastha, they make a deal: the kayastha cooks, the demon does not eat him. After some time the kayastha wants to go home to his own people. The demon agrees and as a mark of his gratitude, gives him some strands of hair. If the kayastha ever needs help he will just have to burn the hair and the demon will appear. Passed on for generations, these two tales from Garhwal, combine humor and adventure.
