ACK-E-139-Prince Hritadhwaja

Amar Chitra Katha (Eng)-139-PRINCE HRITADHWAJA

RETOLD FROM THE MARKANDEYA PURANA

The Markandeya Purana is one of the eighteen major Puranas of Hiduism originally written in Sanskri. The text's title Markandeya refers to a sage in Hindu History, who is the central character in two legends, one linked to Shiva and other to Vishnu.
The Markandeya Purana is probably one of the oldest in Purana genre of Hindu Literature, among the most interesting and important, states Ludo Rocher It is famous for including the Devi Mahatmya within it, the oldest known treatise on Devi (Goddess) as the Supreme Truth and Creator Of The Universe The text is considered as a central text of the Hindu Goddess-related Shaktism tradition, with an extraordinary expression of reverence for the feminine. The Markandeya Purana's Devi Mahatmya is often ranked in some Hindu traditions to be as important as the Bhagavad Gita.
The extant manuscripts of this Purana have 137 chapters, of which chapters 81 through 93 is the Devi Mahatmya. Tradition and some medieval era texts assert that the Markandeya Purana has 9,000 verses, but surviving Manuscripts have about 6,900 verses. 2,100 verses were transferred to Devi Bhagavatam. The text presents a diverse range of topics, with socio-cultural information and symbolism for Vedic ideas and Metaphysical Thought.

ACK-E-102-Nagananda

Amar Chitra Katha (Eng)-102-NAGANANDA

AN ADAPTATION OF HARSH'S FAMOUS SANSKRIT PLAY

Brhatkatha  is an ancient Indian epic, said to have been written by Gunadhya in a poorly-understood language known as Paisaci. The work no longer exists but several later adaptations the Kathasaritsagara, Brhatkathamanjari  and Brhatkathaslokasamgraha in Sanskrit, as well as the Perunkatai and Vasudevahimdi in vernaculars make commentary on the piece.
The date of its composition is uncertain. According to testimonials by later Sanskrit poets such as Dandin, Subandhu, and Bana, the Brhatkatha existed in the 6th century CE. According to other estimates it predates that period by several more centuries. For example, if the story of Udayana by poet Bhasa (and also later by Harsha in Ratnavali) was inspired by Brihatkatha, it had to be older than the time of Bhasa itself uncertain, but before the 3rd century CE.

ACK-E-098-Pundalik And Sakhu

Amar Chitra Katha (Eng)-098-PUNDALIK AND SAKHU

TWO FAMOUS SAINTS OF MAHARASTRA

In the Bhakti tradition, there is a highly revered Saint known as Pundalik. Pundalik has come to be known as a symbol for Supreme, Unconditional Love. His heart was so open and his Love forgot no one. Pundalik’s devotion caused God to go looking for him.
Pundalik lived in Maharashtra and he was not always a Saint. His profession was that of a local goon who used to harass people. He mistreated and abused his own parents and cared little or nothing for no one, except himself. One day Pundalik met a Saint who initiated him into the path of Bhakti Yoga. Pundalik began his spiritual practice but was unable to change his evil ways. He could not still control his mind and was not able to experience any inner peace. So, he went back to his Guru, the Saint who had initiated him, and asked for further instruction.

Sakhu Bai, an ardent devotee of Vitthal, lives with her husband and a cruel mother-in-law. The mother thinks that her daughter-in-law will spoil her only son and then he will start neglecting his mother. Her husband also does not say anything to his mother because he thinks that since he is her only son, people will disrespect him and his wife if he takes his wife's side. So Sakhu has to bear all the ill-treatment silently. She worships Vitthala with all her heart and forgets her daily sufferings.

ACK-E-078-Sridatta

 Amar Chitra Katha (Eng)-078-SRIDATTA

The Kathāsaritsāgara ,Ocean of the Streams of Stories  is a famous 11th-century collection of Indian legends, fairy tales and folk tales as retold in Sanskrit by the Shaivite Somadeva.

Kathasaritsagara contains multiple layers of story within a story and is said to have been adopted from Guṇaḍhya's Bṛhatkatha , which was written in a poorly-understood language known as Paisachi. The Bṛhatkatha is no longer extant but several later adaptations still exist the Kathasaritsagara, Bṛhatkathamanjari and Bṛhatkathaslokasaṃgraha. However, none of these recensions necessarily derives directly from Gunadhya, and each may have intermediate versions. Scholars compare  Guṇaḍhya  with  Vyasa  and Valmiki even though he did not write the now long-lost Bṛhatkatha in Sanskrit. Presently available are its two Sanskrit recensions, the  Bṛhatkathamanjari  by  Kṣemendra and the Kathasaritsagara by Somadeva.

ACK-E-041-Chhatrasal

Amar Chitra Katha (Eng)-041-Chhatrasal

The Founder Of The Kingdom Of Bundelkhand

Chhatrasal Bundela (4 May 1649 – 20 December 1731) was an Indian warrior and ruler from the Bundela Rajput clan, who fought against the Mughal Empire, and established his own kingdom in Bundelkhand during the 17th-18th centuries.
Chhatrasal declared independence from Mughals in the 1720s and was able to resist the Mughals until he was attacked by Muhammad Khan Bangash in December 1728. Chhatrasal was 79 years old when he led his army against Bangash, after a severe battle Chhatrasal was defeated and was forced to retreat to his fort at Jaitpur. The Mughals besieged him and conquered most of his territories. Chhatrasal made several attempts to ask the Baji Rao I, the Peshwa of Maratha Empire, for help. However, the Peshwa was busy and could not help Chhatrasal until March 1729. In a letter sent to Baji rao, Chhatrasal wrote: "Know you Bajirao! That I am in the same plight in which the famous elephant was when caught by the crocodile. My valiant race is on the point of extinction. Come and save my honour". Peshwa Baji rao I personally led his army towards Bundelkhand and attacked several Mughal outposts, the Mughal supplies were completely cut off by the swift cavalry of the Peshwa in the Battle of Malwa. Bangash, who was surprised by the sudden involvement of the Marathas, sent several letters to the Mughal emperor for aid, however upon being denied any help he started negotiations with Chhatrasal and Bajirao. Bangash was allowed to retreat on the condition that he never returns or shows aggression towards Bundelkhand. Chhatrasal rewarded the peshwa with large tracts of lands and diamond mines in Bundelkhand which helped the Marathas to gain access to Central and North India.
