ACK (English)-821-The Adventures Of Pratapan

THE ADVENTURES OF PRATAPAN

AN ADAPTATION OF THE FIRST TAMIL NOVEL

The Adventures of Pratapan is adapted from Pratapa Mudaliar Charitram, the first novel to be written in Tamil. Written in 1879 by Mayuram Vedanayakam Pillai (1826-1889), the novel was a landmark in Tamil literature because till that time, Tamil literature only consisted of poetry. Vedanayakam Pillai, influenced by the ideas of women's liberation and secularism, created a strong female character, Jnanam. The story begins with the hero, Pratapan, being completely in love with Jnanam's beauty and strength of character. Jnanam returns his feelings. Unfortunately their happiness is marred by the constant bickering of their fathers. The couple is separated and one day, Jnanam goes missing. Pratapan's adventures begin then and conclude with a surprising twist to the story.

SUKHU AND DUKHU

AND OTHER FOLKTALES FROM BENGAL

When a weaver dies, one of his wives drives the other one and her daughter out of the house. But the gentle and generous nature of the daughter brings good fortune. Six queens plot against the seventh, jealous that she is bearing the King's heir and accuse her of witchcraft. A thoughtless queen decrees that anyone who cries in her kingdom will be thrown out, not foreseeing that one day she too might feel sorrow. India has a rich heritage of folktales, most of which are never written down, present only in a rapidly vanishing oral culture. Each region and language has its own particular set of stories - though many tales recur across different traditions. The stories here are taken from Bengal.

KADAMBARI

AN ADAPTATION OF BANABHATTA'S SANSKRIT CLASSIC

Kadambari is one of the best known Sanskrit romantic novels. It was written by Banabhatta, the court poet of King Harshavardhana, in the early 7th Century AD. The original has a hugely complex plot, with Kadambari herself appearing only half-way through. The story is a popular one, a version can be found in the Kathasaritsagara, amongst many other ancient favorites. It continues to be translated into various Indian languages. Kadambari is often said to be one of the first novels and the word kadambari has come to mean a novel in many Indian languages today.

ACK (English)-813-Maarthaanda Varma

MAARTHAANDA VARMA

A ROMANTIC LEGEND FROM KERALA

The old Maharaja of Travancore grew frail and there was talk of who should succeed him. By matrilineal tradition his nephew, Maarthaanda Varma, was the heir. But councilors were plotting to break with custom and install the Maharaja's gullible son on the throne. The best way to get rid of Maarthaanda, they decided, was to kill him. The story of Maarthanda's escape and his coronation has been adapted from the novel Maarthaandavarma by C.V. Raman Pillai, one of the great Malayalam writers. In Maarthaandavarma, he writes a historical romance about an actual Maharaja of Travancore. Historically, Maarthaanda Varma is still remembered for uniting the kingdom of Travancore and providing it with a just and strong government.
