ACK (English)-843-The Unhappy Tiger

THE UNHAPPY TIGER

STTORIES FROM THE HITOPADESHA

When a frightened mouse comes to a sage for help, he turns it into a larger, stronger animal so it can look after itself. But that does not suffice and the creature finds that there is still much more to fear. What will the sage do? Pandit Vishnu Sharma wrote the Panchatantra between the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC. Much later, in the 11th or 12th century AD, Narayana, the author of the Hitopadesha, drew upon the Panchatantra for his collection of fables. The Hitopadesha is divided into four books: Mitralabha (Gaining Friends), Suhrudbheda (Causing dissension between friends), Vigraha (Separation) and Sandhi (Union). Amar Chitra Katha brings five witty stories from the Hitopadesha. Each character in these stories becomes a vehicle of learning, either directly or indirectly.

ACK (English)-817-Sukhu And Dukhu

SUKHU AND DUKHU

AND OTHER FOLKTALES FROM BENGAL

When a weaver dies, one of his wives drives the other one and her daughter out of the house. But the gentle and generous nature of the daughter brings good fortune. Six queens plot against the seventh, jealous that she is bearing the King's heir and accuse her of witchcraft. A thoughtless queen decrees that anyone who cries in her kingdom will be thrown out, not foreseeing that one day she too might feel sorrow. India has a rich heritage of folktales, most of which are never written down, present only in a rapidly vanishing oral culture. Each region and language has its own particular set of stories - though many tales recur across different traditions. The stories here are taken from Bengal.

ACK (English)-807-The Green Demaon

THE GREEN DEMON

THE COLLECTION OF SUFI TALES

A young man wanders into a village to find that pandemonium prevails among the men working in the fields because of a demon! His curiosity aroused, the man asks about the demon and is amused to realize that the demon is merely a watermelon. When he tries to prove this to the disbelieving men, they turn on him, accusing him of being more wicked than a demon. This collection of Sufi tales mines human superstition and foolishness for a wise and richly comic look at the world around us. Sufism is a branch of Islam that seeks to discover the inner mystical aspects of religion. A Sufi teacher teaches his students not what to learn but how to learn, by examining himself and his fellow human  beings.
