ACK (English)-778-Marie And Pierre Curie

MARIE AND PIERRE CURIE

THEY SHARED A PASSION FOR SCIENCE

Born in Paris, Pierre was the son of Eugène Curie and Sophie-Claire Depouilly Curie. He was educated by his father, and in his early teens showed a strong aptitude for mathematics and geometry. When he was 16, he earned his math degree. By the age of 18 he had completed the equivalent of a higher degree, but did not proceed immediately to a doctorate due to lack of money. Instead he worked as a laboratory instructor.
Marie Skłodowska-Curie (7 November 1867 – 4 July 1934) was a Polish and naturalized-French physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person (and only woman) to win twice, the only person to win twice in multiple sciences, and was part of the Curie family legacy of five Nobel Prizes. She was also the first woman to become a professor at the University of Paris, and in 1995 became the first woman to be entombed on her own merits in the Panthéon in Paris.
Pierre Curie met Maria Skłodowska when a friend introduced him to her. What attracted Pierre to Marie was her devotion to science. He proposed to her but she refused, even though she loved him, too. She finally agreed to marry him on 26 July 1895.
